【問題】
（１） He could sit up in bed and even eat a little, but the fever persisted. The plastic bag hung on a stand above his head dripping antibiotics into his veins day and night. Nobody mentioned it, not he nor any of the doctors, but he knew that they were afraid that he had picked up one of those new hospital-bred wild varieties of bacteria for which no treatment had yet been found.
（２） Some people say that it is bad to read old-fashioned fairy tales to little children because they make them afraid. But even without fairy tales the lives of little children are full of fears. Like very primitive people they live in a world that they cannot begin to understand. Fairy tales can do for small children, and indeed have been doing for many years, what myth and religious ceremonies did for primitive peoples — give their fears a name to identify them with, a handle by which to take hold of them and perhaps to cast them out. A child who can turn his fear of the unknown into a fear of ghosts, witches, giants, and the like, may be able to get rid of much of that fear when he finds that such things do not exist.

【和訳】
（１） 彼はベッドに起き上がり、少し食事をすることさえできた。しかし、熱は依然高かった。彼の頭の上のスタンドにはビニールのバッグがかかっていて、日夜彼の静脈に抗生物質を注入していた。彼も、医者達も、誰もその事には触れなかった。しかし彼は気づいていた。治療法がまだ見つかっていない、病院で発生した新種の悪性バクテリアに彼が感染しているのではないかと、医者達が疑っている事に。
（２） 時代遅れの童話を小さな子供に読み聞かせると彼らがおびえるからいけない、という人がいる。しかし、童話でおびえなくとも、小さな子供達の生活は恐ろしいものでいっぱいなのだ。原始人と全く同様に、彼らは理解する糸口も見えない世界に生きているのである。 神話や宗教儀式が原始人のために果たしていた役割を、童話は子供達のために果たす事ができるし、実際に長年果たしてきたのである。その役割とはつまり、名前を付けることによってその恐怖を特定し、それを理解する足掛かりとし、場合によってはそれを払拭するためのきっかけを与えることである。 得体の知れないものの恐怖を幽霊・魔女・巨人といったものの恐怖に置き換える事ができれば、そのようなものが存在しないと知ったときに、子供達はその恐怖のほとんどを取り除く事ができるかもしれない。
