The American father refuses to be an absolute ruler in his relations with his wife and children. As a result, the mother often has too much authority, and children also play a decided role in family affairs. Some homes deliberately follow a democratic pattern, making decisions only after a group discussion. (1) This sometimes makes children more assertive than their age or experience might seem to warrant, but it may prepare them effectively for life in an individualistic democracy.
In America a high value is placed on progress. Children sense the spirit of change, the need to find ever better ways of doing things. They absorb the belief that each period must improve on the one before it. (2) Troubled world conditions discourage respect for the way preceding generations have handled affairs and encourage the young to think that they may be more competent than their elders.
