(1) People are liable to confuse leisure with pleasure, and pleasure with idleness. They show little discretion in the use of their increasing freedom from work. Often the best use the working man can make of his spare time is to spend his money in it. Although a person has every right to do as he pleases with time justifiably carved out of the working week, it is disheartening to see this time wasted. And it is wasted; for those who could obtain the most from leisure have been deceived into regarding empty amusement as one of the necessities of life.

(2)
Susan: You haven’t been crying, Mary?
Mary: Yes, I couldn’t help it.
Susan: What on earth for?
Mary: My dear, it’s not unnatural.
Susan: Well, I don’t want to say anything against her now that she’s dead and gone, poor thing, but Miss Freeman was the most disgusting old woman I ever met.
Mary: I was her nurse for ten years. I don’t suppose one can live all that time with anyone and not be a little sorry to part with them for ever.
Susan: How you stood it! Exacting, domineering, disagreeable.
Mary: Yes, I suppose she was. I never saw anyone with such a bitter tongue. At first I used to cry every night when I went to bed because of the things she said to me.

  1. Susan: You haven’t been crying, Mary?
