【問題】

次の文の下線の部分を日本語に訳せ。

（１）　He slept at last, and woke at last in the morning, lying for perhaps five seconds wondering what there was to remember until he remembered it. It was as if the world lay silent as an orchestra under the conductor’s outstretched arms. Then the moment of remembrance set every nerve in his body trembling, as a movement by the conductor might send a hundred bows to work. For one curious transient second he thought he knew how a bride feels on the morning of her wedding.

（２）　Everyone has become increasingly aware of the power of applied science to affect our lives. Sad to say, two great wars played a major part in this enlightenment, and perhaps in consequence, some people fear the destructive powers of science more than they appreciate its beneficent gifts. But most will recognize that our own choice decides what use we make of our control over nature, and what any one of us thinks the balance will be depends chiefly upon whether he expects good or evil to prevail in the world generally. In the last resort I believe the majority of people expect, on the whole, good to flow from the use of knowledge.

【和訳】

（１）　彼はついに眠り、ついに目覚めた。何か思い出さねばならない事があったように思って、それを思い出すまで5秒間ほど横たわったままでいた。それは指揮者が伸ばした腕の下のオーケストラのように、世界が沈黙を保っているかのようだった。 そしてそれを思い出した瞬間、指揮者の一振りで百の弓が音を奏で始めるように、その記憶が彼の体の全神経を震えさせた。 奇妙なつかの間の一秒間、彼は花嫁が結婚式の朝にどんな風に感じるのか、分かったような気がした。

（２）　応用化学が我々の生活に及ぼす力に誰もが気づき始めている。悲しい事に、このように気が付いたのは2度の大戦がきっかけだった。そしておそらくその結果として、一部の人は科学の利益に感謝する以上に、その破壊的な力を恐れている。しかし、私たちが自然への支配力をどのように利用するかは、私たち自身の選択によって決定されるのだと、ほとんどの人が気が付く事になるだろう。そして誰がその統制を思い描いたとしても、その人が世界全体に善と悪のどちらが流布して欲しいと考えるか次第で、その大部分が決まってくるのである。ほとんどの人が知識の利用によって善が行き渡る事を総合的には望んでいるのだと、最後の頼みの綱として、私はそう信じているのである。
